ETERNAL PEDRO Teacher Pedro Gama Filho, black-belt in judo and jiu-jitsu, was the president of CBLA – Confederação Brasileira de Lutas Associadas, creator of the Education Project at several communities from Rio de Janeiro and also a great motivator of the national judo. Beyond his professional success, as person he was admirable and loved by everyone around him – which makes really difficult to talk “about our dear Uncle Pedro”. Teacher Pedro for some, Uncle Pedro for the majority, he was capable of being father, friend, and at the same time, advisor or a kind of base, maybe the equilibrium point to from Nova Geração. Especially to Francisco “Toco”, was a guru, the first person to be needed when there was any problem. His presence, mainly in the morning trainings, was one more joy with his stories, his combats without hour to finish, energy wanted by a lot. Without talking about his technique: a mixture of subtleties with levers that only worked with him. “Impressive”! Uncle Pedro was so loved, that even his obscenities did not irritate his adversaries. If there was any other person squeezing your head, you would claim immediately “you are rude”, or stop training. But not with him! His energy did not permit; it was a pleasure receiving his strokes. “All of us had really passion to that person.
We dedicate the Brazilian Championship of teams 2005, realized at Universidade
Gama Filho, to you, Uncle Pedro, absent here, but always present by
soul. We pray a lot for you that especial day. In our memory, your image
represents the victory, the conquest and the battle. For your disciples,
you are eternal and unreplaceble. Thanks for everything. Kisses whenever
you are. All that comes from your relatives is important to us. You
are all welcome. Kisses to the whole family, especially to my dear Aunt
Tânia”. – says “Toco” emotionally. |

ABOUT CARLSON GRACIE Carlson Gracie was son of Carlos Gracie, who brought the jiu-jitsu to Brazil in 1917 – until this date teaching martial arts out of Japan was considered crime – and nephew of the legendary Hélio Gracie, the best fighter and responsible for the teaching of the Japanese martial art here. Francisco Toco was introduced to Carlson by his teacher Maneco in 1987. His first impression was that he had arrived at the fighters’ temple, how high was the athletes’ quality. He was welcome affectively by “that serious person that communicated by gestures and hands’ movements, but with very big heart”. Toco was the only student to be a black belt at his own academy, in a great surprise prepared by his master Carlson. Today he tries to teach his disciples all the technique and philosophy he learned. “I considered Carlson Gracie my second father. I liked his company. I still remember when there was a championship on Saturday and on Thursday at night, he intimidated his student saying that he was already entered to the competition. He was a real character! Paying tribute to someone like Carlson is really difficult, as he is an icon. He is unique, there is no person like him. I miss him a lot!” – remember Toco. |
